November 20th

40007 / 50000 words. 80% done!

This update needed one of those nifty counters, so here we go! I'm on the last stretch now. I am attempting to finish this thing on Sunday (today!) so even though I am not at the Night of Writing Dangerously, I can at least finish on the night. And when I do, I am going to invest in one of those spiffy Viking hats. Must. Have. Viking. Hat! And then I'll wear it to further write-ins because I will still be going to those even when I'm finished. I am trying to write a whole lot more before the end of November. I am in a year challenge and for most of it I slacked off in it. I have nearly 141,000 more words to write after I complete my NaNo. So I'll be attempting to write another 50,000 words in the last days before the 30th. Wouldn't that be something? I would be pretty stoked about that. I can do it. I can so do it. Especially because I have a lot of writing projects to work into it. And I am counting my journal entries too. How meta is it that I am talking about it here? Heh. I need to check my steps because I need to get to those too. December is going to be plenty rough on me since I haven't been using my pedometer.

I'm not happy with my plot, but I am getting it down on paper. I think it has potential. When I revise--and I will revise this one--I am going to rework the style. I have been writing from one character's point of view during each day of November. Instead, I am going to write shorter passages for each character on each day, or the important days in their lives. There is a lot of potential here even if it hasn't been realized yet. I will also be revising my short story collection, which takes place before this piece. I am intent on getting that published next year.

Beginning today, to get my 250k words and 1million steps, I need to average the following:

Averaging 3683 words a day
Averaging 7413 steps a day

It's time to really get myself into shape with words and steps. I've been letting myself slack for too long. Gotta get more sleep, write more, and walk more. I hope this really sparks some things up. I'll start on this new regiment today.

I am! My friend had the video on a CD she made and I needed it. Turns out she had heard it used with a video about Rory, which made it doubly special.

I haven't really checked out his other stuff. What are your favorites?

:-D That's okay. I still look very fondly on that first fic of yours I read. I think it is very ingenious. I love the way you write women. It is making me spastic to see you write HG. She's your type of lady.

The video about Rory is GORGEOUS. It blew me away. And... geez, favorite Josh Ritter songs? Got eighteen hours? ;-D I kid. Sort of. ~ahem~

* "Kathleen" - The simple power of this song is that it's hopeful. It's a song about unrequited love, and acceptance that it will always be that way. And it has one of the most beautiful first lines ever: "All the other girls here are stars/You are the Northern Lights/They try to shine in through your curtain/You're too close and too bright."
* "Lantern" - It's a song about getting through the darkness, and letting someone light your lantern. The chorus is "Be the light of my lantern/I need light in my lantern." At a concert, as soon as he started singing it, the entire audience revealed they had glowsticks. Josh was, as you can imagine, blown away. It was an awesome sight. :D
* "Girl in the War" - Simple, poetic... at first I thought it was a song about soldiers, but it's really about losing someone to an illness. "I got a girl in the war, Paul, I know they can hear me yell/If they can't find a way to help her they can go to hell."
* "Thin Blue Flame" - Epic. Just epic. It's a gorgeous saga about a dream, about looking at the world and finding it a crass and dangerous and deadly place and losing hope in heaven... until he wakes up and hears his friends and family. "I wondered what it was I'd been looking for above/Heaven's so big there ain't no need to look up."
* "To the Dogs or Whoever" - This one might need a few listens to appreciate, but it's just great. It's noisy and chaotic and beautifully written. Some people think he's listing several girls, but I think "Florence and Calamity and Joan of Arc" are aspects of one single girl. And to understand the title...
* "Empty Hearts" - Just a sweet little plea. I listen to it every New Years Eve at midnight. "Don't let me into this year with an empty heart..." and "I'm inside with my friends/We build fires and pretend/That the night could just bend on forever/While outside in the frost/Are the wolves and the lost/And we sing to the dogs or whoever."

I think that'll keep you busy for a while. I have all of his albums and I'd be happy to share. :D

One sidenote... he has a song called Harrisburg. Whenever he performs it live, in the middle of the song, he's taken to making a segue into another completely different song. By another singer! He's done Wicked Game by Chris Isaak, Tiny Cities Made of Ashes by Modest Mouse... it's brilliant. :D

And a member of his band has evolved from being called Zack Hickman to "The Reverend Doctor Zachariah Obediah Hickman." ;-D

Also... sorry... but you asked me to talk Josh. ~g~ If you like Change of Time, he has a similar-themed song on his debut album called "Beautiful Night." I don't know if this embedding will work, but I hope it does. It would be a good Doctor vid, too, come to think of it! :D

Ah, embedding didn't work. Still. "Beautiful Night"! Check it out. :D
